A drive disc rotates to draw the yarn from a central drilling in the unit to form windings, the coils being advanced by the configuration of the spiral path formed by the sprung discs. A limit plate is located in a position representing the required yarn length in the winding store so that when the plate is tripped, a micro-switch disconnects the drive allowing yarn to be drawn off, the micro-switch resuming power to allow the drive disc to draw in more yarn to compensate for that drawn off. This provides a simple yarn feed system which does not impose friction damage on the yarn, giving a specific length available for use, with a simple mechanism to advance the windings.
