Method and means are disclosed for preventing tissue from adhering to surgical apparatus (e.g. a heated surgical scalpel) while operating at tissue temperatures (usually 100-500 DEG C) at which haemostasis with minimal tissue damage occurs, and include interposing between the surgical apparatus 11 and the tissue 13 being heated thereby a non-adherent coating 12 which has specific parameters including thermal impedance, thickness and thermal drop thereacross.
