The crane has a jib (5) which is coupled to a revolving tower (3) so that the jib can be luffed about a horizontal axis (4). A lifting cable winch (6) is carried at the upper end of the revolving tower (3) and guide pulleys (11) for the cable (8) are carried by the tower (3) and positioned forwardly of the winch (6) in the direction of the jib (5). Further guide pulleys are provided at the head of the jib (5) for the cable (8) such that the load hook (15) describes a substantially horizontal path (17) when the jib (5) is luffed. The cable winch (6) is located such that the up-ended jib can be brought into a vertical or nearly vertical position. The crane has the advantage of small external dimensions and can therefore be set up at a short distance from external objects such as a ship's superstructure. IMAGE
