The belt passes through the recess and round a rod of the locking element. Tension on the belt pulls the rod across the recess and jams the belt between the rod and the edge of the recess. There is a risk of severing the belt on the sharp edge of the recess. This is prevented by the provision of a protective plate, pref. of sheet metal, with a round lip covering the side of the recess. The plate may also have upward ridges. The projections at the rear edge of the rod bear against the ridges under increasing tension on the belt and deform them, thus carrying the plate forward with the rod, the lip unrolling and further reducing the risk of severing the belt.
