A sphincter cone assembly for purifying water comprises a cone-shaped vessel having an upper cylindrical extension surrounding a cylindrical surge tank and having a tapered bottom wall which forms a perimetrically extending annular well into which water flows from the surge tank, and an outlet pipe connected to the bottom of the vessel below its apex and including a pinch valve and a flap valve operable to force out water entrained within solids formed beneath the apex and discharge small compacted, relatively dry slugs of collected particulates. The assembly vessel has no moving parts and is of simple construction.
