METHOD FOR STARTING UP A CONVERTER STATION OF A HIGH VOLTAGE DC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

ABSTRACTTo start up a converter station of a high-voltaged.c. transmission system, the station being initiallynot connected to any functioning three-phase system, theactive power required is drawn from the d.c. side of theconverter station, and the reactive power required isdrawn from an independent reactive power source. Thelatter is initially run up to the a.c. operating voltageand frequency, whereupon the controllable rectifierelements of the converter station are triggered. Duringrun-up, converter losses may be made up by an activepower source on the a.c. side e.g. a Diesel stand-bygenerator. The converter station can then be used totransmit power from a network to start a generating plantassociated with the converter station, after which thegenerating plant can feed the network through the converterstation. The converter station may be part of a HVDCtransmission network, or of an internal HVDC block of agenerating plant.
