ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA free-piston regenerative engine includes a pistonchamber having an upper portion, a lower portion and a bottom.A displacer piston is slidably mounted to move through a strokewithin the upper portion of the piston chamber, the displacerpiston including a top surface area and a bottom surface area.The engine also includes the series combination of a heater,a regenerator and a cooler in communication with the pistonchamber and being referenced to the top surface area and thebottom surface area of the displacer piston. An inertial pistonis slidably mounted within the piston chamber, and a diaphragmis positioned to move through a stroke at a lower portion ofthe piston chamber wherein a fluid chamber is defined betweenthe diaphragm and the bottom of the piston chamber, wherebyfluid is supplied to and discharged from the fluid chamber inresponse to movement of the displacer piston. The displacerpiston remains stationary for a predetermined period of timeat the end of the stroke to allow the diaphragm to complete itsstroke prior to reversing the motion of the displacer piston.Variation of the predetermined period of time varies the enginefrequency and output power.
