the invention relates to the manufacture of single crystals of alpha mercuric iodide by solution growth.;we use a solution of alpha mercuric iodide in an organic sulfoxide, preferably in combination with an alcohol such as methanol in the presence of an excess of iodine.solution the purified preferably by electrolysis, and the single crystal is preferably is able to block the cavity growth defects in the single crystal.;application of the radiation detectors.
