RADIO RECEPTOR ASSAY FOR BENZODIAZEPINES IN PLASMA AND OTHER BIOLOGICAL SPECIMENS

A sensitive and specific test for radio receivers for the determination of benzodiazepines in plasma and other biological media without equipment or sophisticated methodology. This method is based on the rivalry between (3H) tritiated diazepam or flunitrazepam and pharmacologically active benzodiazepines presented in plasma for the binding sites on synaptosomal membranes of rat brain. No interference is obtained with free drugs plasma or plasma containing high concentrations of other drugs used commonly. High correlations (r = 0.98; p 0.001) are obtained between "equivalent diazepam" measures in plasma using the test radio receiver and levels of diazepam and N-demethyldiazepame obtained by gas-liquid chromatography. The test radio receiver is useful for maintaining benzodiazepine levels in the blood for both therapeutic and toxicological requirements.
