To locate potential way sublayers of formations hydrocarbon content or other abnormalities of the layers the inclination measuring devices (TITS) measure the time of arrival, direction and the apparent magnitude of an earth tide-induced the moon in a row of points on the surface of the earth. The measurements are combined to determine the shape of the tidal wave of interest in an area. The shape indicates the abnormal sub-layers in the region. The tilt measuring device is mounted on adjustable support legs (188) and includes buckets carrying a fluid (168, 170) in which the fluid level changes with respect to the bucket with the rise and fall of the surface earthly. An optical device comprising a monochromatic light source (62) generates interferrometriques bands as and as the distance between the fluid surface and a fixed mirror (65) changes. The fixed mirror (65) is space so as closer to the fluid surface to produce multiple reflections (67) therebetween which increases considerable way the sensitivity of measurements and a network of logic circuits (72-90) determines the number strips and their manner of movement directions to establish the time and magnitude of peak movement from the crust. A control heating system thermostat (226) maintains the fluid in the cups and adjustable support legs at a constant temperature to eliminate measurement errors due to thermal expansion effects, drift and seismic noise of high frequency.
