A process for the preparation of mixtures of brominated styrene polymers and brominated aromatic compounds; mixtures obtained by this process as well as their application

Mixtures of brominated olimeren polystyrenes, which have a polymerization degree of 3 to 400, and low molecular weight brominated aromatic compounds of the type of diphenyl ethers are obtained by polymerization of the unbrominated starting materials in a halogenated hydrocarbon as solvent with the aid of Lewis acid catalysts. After the bromination the reaction mixture is extracted with water, removed hydrogen bromide and a catalyst and the solvent is removed and volatile components. The bromination takes place in the temperature range from -30 ° C to + 130 ° C instead. The melt viscosity of the mixtures is low so that they are particularly suitable for incorporation into thermoplastics for their flame-proofing.
