Vulcanization accelerator based on a) melamine derivatives of the general formula I IMAGE in which R represents hydrogen or the radical IMAGE and R2 and R3 are identical or different hydrogen, a straight-chain or branched C1-C4 alkyl or alkenyl group, a C3-C7, are preferred C5-C6, cycloalkyl group, where R2 and R3 can also be connected to one another via a C2-C12, preferably C2-C6 alkylene bridge in which there is also a heteroatom such as oxygen, sulfur or N-C1-C4, preferably C1-alkyl can be, optionally in combination with b) conventional vulcanization accelerators from the group of thiazole accelerators and optionally c) other conventional accelerators. The melamine compounds are not very toxic and do not irritate the skin and do not discolor vulcanizates.
