Electric typewriter has type bars (27) driven by respective drive pawls engageable with a toothed drive shaft (1) in response to depression of a key (49). If a key is depressed while the electric motor stands still one or more of the pawls can be undesirably dropped into engagement with the shaft. To avoid the consequent actuation of the type bar(s) when the motor is started, the motor switch is connected to release a spring-loaded bar (46) which moves any dropped pawl into the retracted position. The bar is returned automatically by a cam when the motor starts.
