The hammer power can be varied within specified limits, and a device measures impact energy absorbed by the specimen. It consists of an indicator ring rotating together with the pendulum, with angle increment scale, and a fixed reading device responding to the scale and generating angle increment pulses in accordance with the pendulum rotation. A counter numerically displays the absorbed impact energy. Different counting ranges, corresp. to the possible value of the pendulum energy, are allocated to the counter (29). These counting ranges have a common factor the number of angle increment pulses corresponding to the pendulum (6) initial height of fall. A counting pulse generator (27) generates for each angle increment pulse a number of counting pulses equal to the number the common factor is contained in the respective counting ranges.
