The motor driven grinding disc (5) is mounted on a slide which can be moved by a numerically controlled drive. The slide moves both across the clamping spindle (3, 4) over X - and Y - coordinates and parallel to the spindle. The slide with grinding spindle can further be pivoted about an axis which crosses the spindle axis at 90 deg. The arrangement is used to grind lenses with a complicated contour without the use of profile tools.
