The plug connection is for use between the head of an artificial hip joint and the proximal part of the femur anchoring stem. It is positive but mechanically loose, avoiding friction and consequent wear, so that there is no risk of the implant working loose. It can be so designed that no surface damage occurs to the materials either during surgery or subsequently under load, thus avoiding corrosion.
