Visual stimulation may be used for early diagnosis of degenerative changes of the eye and multiple sclerosis. The invention is based on the Fechner Benham rotating disc which presents a rapidly changing dark/light pattern to the eye resulting in colour sensation. The improvement consists in providing adjustable patterns. The adjustment may be mechanical in the case of the disc or electronic when the disc is replaced by a black and white T.V. monitor where the pattern may be a rapidly changing checker board or lattice network etc. During the positive modulation pulses corresponding to light areas on the screen, additional contrast patterns may be added whose duration and phase are variable.
