The pneumatic rotary actuator comprises a piston (6) with circular cross-section which is movable between cushioned end positions in a toroidal cylinder (4). The piston is carried by a segment-shaped piston rod (5) rigidly secured to a central output shaft. Projections (12,18) on the piston and piston rod enter corresponding blind bores (10) with seals (13) to provide adjustable cushioning at the ends of the rotary stroke. The piston seal may be by O-ring (7). The piston rod may be integral with the output shaft so that radial forces are transmitted to the shaft.
