The contactless eddy current braking system uses permanent magnets (3) arranged on either side of the secondary part (1) of the drive, extending along the path of the rail vehicle. The permanent magnets are relatively movable to one another and have opposite poles (3) facing one another. The relative movement of the magnets may comprise rotation of the poles (3) about an axis perpendicular to the direction of movement of the rail vehicle, or sliding of the poles (3) in this direction. In either case, the amount of displacement is less than the spacing between adjacent, opposing poles (3). Pref. the secondary part (1) is of Aluminium with eddy currents induced by relative movement of the facing magnets.
