Device for contactless measurement of relative or absolute displacement of an object over a linear or radial measurement scale comprises signal generating elements (2), of electrically conducting material, and a rigid or flexible support (1), of electrically insulating material. The signaling elements are arranged at regular intervals over the scale. An evaluation unit measures the displacement based on the Eddy current loss caused by rotation or movement of the support relative to high frequency coils (L1.1, L1.2).
