The axial flow gas laser includes an ion trap grating, to prevent damage due to the presence of metal particles. The laser has two discharge tubes (11,12) coupled to a gas circulation loop (13a,13b) supplied by a Roots blower (14). Ring electrodes (15,16) are convected to an external high voltage supply. A gas bottle (28) provides a limited flow of helium-nitrogen- carbon dioxide gas. The inlet to the Roots blower contains a gas cooler (29) and expansion bellows (21) to provide damping of vibrations. The ion trap grating (30) is located in this section and is manufactured as a mesh of nickel.
