The collapsible scale for spirit levels has an arrangement such that the degree scale is not rigidly mounted beneath the level but has a linkage enabling it to be folded into the body of the level, or into the arm where it is received by a slot in the body or arm. The level has a simple latching arm enabling it to be clamped in an inclination setting. The same latching device is reversed to enable the folded arm to be clamped to the body. The inclination level is compact and simple to operate and avoids the disadvantage of the level of existing levels in that the degree scale projects upward considerably when the level is being used as a normal spirit level.
