A lubricant performance testing device with a measurement bearing in the form of an axial oller bearing enables the film formation qualities of a lubricant under frictional contact to be evaluated. The measurement bearing is an axial tapered roller bearing (1) with distortion-free bearing discs (9,10) and tapered rollers (11) which can be displaced radially using nuts (16) on the thread of a bolt (14) on which the bearing slides. The roller rotation axes are perpendicular to the bearing axis. One bearing disc (9) has a plane bearing surface. The radial displacement of the tapered rollers may alternatively be accomplished using hydraulic pistons. The bearing housing disc (9) may be displaceable in the axial direction. The device measures the frictional moment over revolution rate and oil film thickness over revolution rate characteristics.
