High costs and delays involved in repairing or replacing sections of takeoff, landing or running strips in airports are reduced or eliminated by use of a transportable structural element. This is made up from a series of virtually rectangular slabs of concrete (10), arranged one behind another and hinge-connected together at their end faces. Each pref. has a series of holes (12) passing through it, for cables (14) to be drawn through, so as to run through all the slabs. Abutting end faces (16) may be covered by metal or plastic caps or battens, and plastics panels may be interposed. Lengths of roadway or tracks can be transported onto site, and very quickly laid.
