The optical scanner esp. for monitoring surfaces for faults has a narrow beam source and a deflector, esp. a mirror wheel (11) at the focal point of a strip-shaped hollow mirror to deflect light to the hollow mirror in periodically occurring strips of light. The hollow mirror (12) reflects light parallel to itself to a perpendicular scanning plane in which it produces a sharp scanning light dot. A plane strip deflecting mirror (13) folding the light path from the hollow mirror to the deflector is slightly curved about an axis.
