The desulphurising agent is blown into the melt with nitrogen has from a lance, and consists by wt. of carbon 0.3-1.0%, a Mg cpd. 1-10% (calculated as Mg) and the balance calcium carbide. The carbon is powder of grain size 44 mu consisting of graphite, coke, smokeless coal, charcoal or carbon black with a carbon content of 80%. The Mg cpd. is powder of grain size 44 mu consisting of magnesium clinker or dolomite clinker. The clacium carbide is of grain size 500 mu. Clogging of the lance nozzle caused by the reaction of calcium carbide with nitrogen and deposition of the resulting calcium cyanamide (CaCN2) is prevented by the carbon and Mg cpd. to avoid the deposition.
