Olefinic cpds. prodn. by dehydrohalogenation of satd. cpds. - using pulsed coherent light, esp. for vinyl chloride prodn. with high yield and selectivity
In the prodn. of (halogenated) cpds. (I) with olefinic double bond(s) by dehydrohalogenation of the corresp. satd. cpd. (II), gaseous (II) is passed into a reactor irradiated with pulsed coherent light. The wavelength of the light, pressure and temp. in the reactor are selected so that a capture cross-section of 10 exp. -15 to 10 exp. -25 cm2/mol. is obtd. Process is used in the prodn. of vinyl chloride (IA) from dichloroethane (IIA). The energy needed to produce the free radical chain reaction is reduced, the conversion and selectivity are increased, almost no harmful by-prods. are formed, catalysts tending to become deactivated or poisoned are unnecessary and the reaction time is reduced.
