The system is responsive to the transmitted heat radiation, e.g. IR radiation. It uses pyroelectric detectors (7) arranged in series in spaced groups, so that the areas monitored by each two adjacent groups overlap, with the individual detectors (7) in each group spaced so that their monitored areas directly join one another in the longitudinal sense. Pref. an input lens (8) is positioned at the focus of each detector (7), with a spectral filter (9) between them matched to the wavelength of the radiation emitted by the low-flying object.
