The compact drive for a lift handling persons in invalid chairs has a drive spindle (2) on which is mounted a bush (3) acting as a bearing at one end, and supported by a fixed plate (1) at the other end. The outer flanged end of the bush carries a drive plate (4) with an operating arm (12) projecting from it. This has a rod (13) projecting from it, parallel to the spindle, and forms part of a combined braking and drive mechanism. This rod passes through a rectangular gap in the edge of a disc (5) adjacent to the drive plate and also through a similar gap in a braking disc (8) adjacent to the fixed plate. The braking disc can slide axially, and is forced towards the drive plate by a spring (10), mounted on the bush and an extension of the brake disc. The end face of this extension has sloping portions acting as locking surfaces.
