The arrangement is intended for a portable microfilm reader. To increase the observable field area of the film, the optical system is movable relative to the housing and/or object or film stage. The optical system may be pivotably carried in the housing and held in vertical position by gravity whilst the housing with film stage is rocked to and fro. The housing may, alternatively, be pivotably connected to the optical system and held in one position by gravity whilst the optical system is moved to and fro. The relative movement may be produced by motor drive. A damper between housing and optics may eliminate undesirable vibration.
