The system transmits data between trackside and vehicle. Reply units are distributed along the trackside. The vehicle interrogates the units and receives one of two part-replies at one of two antennas on opposite sides of the vehicle. The vehicle contains an evaluator that divides the data received by one of two antennae into one of two part-replies. The evaluator decides which of the two part-replies should be passed on for further processing by considering which antenna has received the data and which direction the vehicle is travelling in.
