The refuse compacting press consists of a compacting space surrounded by a case bottom and vertical walls in which the ram is operating. The ram is driven in vertical strokes by two hydraulic power cylinders resting on brackets fitted to the press housing, while the piston rods are connected by cantilever elements and strut with the ram. Sets of support rollers are provided to take up laterally orientated forces during the pressing operation hereby preventing the jamming of the ram. The cylinders are supplied with hydraulic fluid via lines from the drive assembly. A volume distributor connected in series with the drive assembly and with the return lines cuts off the hydraulic fluid supply to both cylinder units simultaneously, if blocking occurs on one of the units.
