The vertical column (C) is fixed in a hole in a disk (6), which rests on the rotating shaft (12) of a motor, so that both the disk (6) and the column (C) are rotated. Disk (6) pref. consists of two semicircular halves, each contg. a semicircular recess, so that when the two halves are bolted together they form a round hole clamping column (C), which is pref. supported by two bearings. The slow rotation of the column, and the light vibration caused by the driving motor, ensures uniform compaction of the gel bed, and thus a sharp sepn. of the cpds. being sepd. from each other in the column.
