The violin (1-3) comprises a chin rest (8A,B) having a bridge-shaped foot (8B) bridging the end of the string retainer (5) which is secured to a knob (7) on the side (2) of the violin by means of a retaining strap (6). The chin rest is fixed to a base (9) provided with a bore with screw thread for a fixing screw (14) passing through a transverse bore in the knob. The screw may have a right-handed thread at one, and left-handed thread at the other end, whilst the bore in the knob is threaded to receive one end of the screw.
