A hydraulic test machine for traction, pressure bending and buckling testing of workpieces under static and dynamic loading has a frictionless ball-mounted, radially-movable test cylinder with play-free rotation which adjusts itself to the shape of the test piece under load. Each cylinder cap (11,11') has a ball-shaped outward surface mating with a cup (12,12') in the bearing cap (13,13'). The cylinder (3) press. rise, in proportion to the support area (8,8') and piston surface area, causes a rotation of the cylinder caps (11,11'). The cylinder caps and cups (12,12') are supported hydrostatically and the dead wts. are compensated by corresp. variations in surface area ratio. In a multiple cylinder arrangement each cylinder contributes equally to the load bar inclination.
