The milling cutter comprises cutting bits (44,47) which are clamped in peripheral radial slots (3) at the end face (4) of the cutter head (1). The bits are each retained in a corresponding recess in a plate (29) which is in turn held in the slot by a bush (10) secured (by 16) in a radially extending bore (7) in the head (1). The bush has a contoured recess (23) engaging a correspondingly contoured projection (36) on the plate. The contours are so arranged that, on securing the bush, the plate is pressed against the bottom (32) of the slot and against the bush (at 39).
