The illumination system for a cine camera (16) includes a pulsed lamp with the light pulses synchronised with the film gate so that the overall power drain on the lamp is minimised. This allows portable lamps to be used without large power supplies. The pulsed lights can be operated from a central control, with the lights (7,9) linked to the control by cable or by transmitted signals. The lights can operate as stroboscopes with the bright period linked to the camera shutter speed.
