The drive system for a magnetic tape recorder/player is designed to generate constant velocity in both directions. The unit has two tape spools (2,3), with the tape (1) looped over two pairs (4,5 and 6,7) of guide rollers as well as a centre loop roller. Spring loaded tensioners (8,9) maintain the correct loading on the tape. A motor driven roller (11) is in contact with an intermediate roller (10) supported on a controlled pivoted link (12). The tape is fed in one of the two directions by moving the intermediate roller to press the tape against one of the guide rollers (4,6). The speed of tape motion is the same in both directions.
