On the outside of the wall is a cooling system next to a layer of refractory bricks with high thermal conductivity; and on the inside of layer is a layer of wear resisting refractory bricks which form the internal surface of the wall. Some bricks project through wear-resistant layer to form a small part of the internal surface of the wall. Bricks are pref. made of graphite, semi-graphite, or carbon, whereas the wear-resistant pref. consist of SiC, myllite, or corundum. The outer cooling system pref. uses plate coolers, box coolers, or drip cooling. Excellent heat transfer is provided from the inner surface of the furnace wall to the cooling system, which need not use a liq. coolant.
