The charging generator has a constant excitation field and a variable drive speed. Until the generator current has attained a limit charging voltage, it is controlled by a setting element (6) in response to the generator frequency preset function in such manner that for each drive speed the maximum generator output is adjusted. The generator output is supplied to the charged accumulator (11) via the setting element, minus a negligible magnitude. Preferably the generator current (I,G) is adjusted in accordance with the preset function to meet a specified exponential function whose power factor is between 0.25 to 1. On reaching the limit charge voltage a part of the tapped generator output may be converted into heat. The setting element is typically incorporated between the generator (3) and the accumulator, the setting element being connected to the control output of a regulator (9), whose input receives a generator frequency dependent signal.
