The method involves controlling or regulating generator voltage (Vg) depending on a charging condition of a lithium-ion battery, an operating mode of an internal combustion engine and a battery or cell temperature. The operating mode of the engine is determined (I) so that the generator voltage is adjusted (II) to a maximum value when the engine is in an overrun mode (S). Charging current of the battery is limited such that charging voltage at individual cells of the battery is adjusted below predetermined maximum charging voltage of the respective individual cells.
