Prepn. of N-aryl di- or triamines of formula (I) (where A and B are opt. substd. aryl; R' and R" are H or lower alkyl; R1 is an opt. substd. alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl gp. or -CHR'-CHR"-NR2-B, and each R2 is independently H or opt. substd. alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, or R1 + R2 is -CHR'-CHR"- or -CHR"-CHR'-) is described. The process comprises carrying out one of the following reactions in the presence of H3PO4 or H3PO3 at 150-225 (pref. 170-200) deg. C: (a) reaction of A-NR3-CHR'-CHR"-OH (II) with H-NR2-B (III), where R3 is H or opt. substd. alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl; (b) reaction of (II; R2 is H) with HO-CHR'-CHR"-NH-B (VI); (c) reaction of HO-CHR'-CHR"-OH (V) with one or two cpds. (III); (d) reaction of A-NR4-CHR'-CHR"-OH (VI) with (III; R2 is H), where R4 is -CHR'-CHR"-NR2-B. (I) are useful as intermediates for dyes, plant protection agents and textile auxiliaries. The process gives high yields (e.g. 85-90%) of high-purity prods.
