The ship propulsion equipment arrangement, partic. for cargo vessels, has an oversize slow-running propeller (8) driven by a shaft (3) displaced vertically to provide the usual under-counter clearance (G) at the top. At the bottom the propeller is protected by one or more keel-like projections under the stern, increasing the draught of the vessel. The bearing-blocks (7) are specially configured to minimise shaft-height above the inner-bottom plating. The hull projection(s) (12) may be only at the after end or the entire keel line may slope from forward to aft, in which case the forecastle slopes up at least correspondingly.
