A large gas duct contg. thermal insulation is intended esp. for conducting high-pressure gas from the hot gas collecting space of a high-temperature reactor to components of the cooling gas circuit. The gas duct consists of a structural wall, a number of layers of compressed fibrous mats, then a series of wire mesh layers overlying the fibrous mats, and finally, between these wire mesh layers and the retaining or cover plates, a perforated plate or grating or the like held in position by the fixing elements which attach the cover plates to the structural duct. Between this perforated plate or grating and the cover plates there is a pressure-relieving gap. The fibrous mats are pref. pre-aged. The wire mesh layers are pref. of different mesh sizes, of decreasing mesh size towards the fibrous mats. Used in closed gas circuits, such as those of high-temperature reactors and process heat plants or in fast breeder reactors, particularly in co-axial gas duct systems.
