The coin-operated gaming machine, i.e. slot machine, is designed such that the time between operation of the stop button and the symbol discs coming to rest is minimised. The system uses discs (1) with a total of 24 symbols around the periphery and is controlled in the stopping mode by a brake (31). Operation of the discs is provided by a signal generator (3), with high and low frequency (4,12) stages providing signals over a selector (5) to a 24 stage ring counter (7). The complete unit (9) provides an event generator function and when the stop key (23) is activated a latch (26) is set to initiate the stop cycle. The period of the stop phase is determined by the output selected (16) from the counter.
