Prodn. of 4-amino-1-cyclohexyl aminobutane (I) by hydrogenative catalytic alkylation of butane-1,4-diamine (II) with cyclohexanone (III) is carried out with a stoichiometric excess of (III) in the presence of an inorganic base (IV) below 100 (below 80) deg.C. Almost complete conversion of the costly (II) to (I) is possible. The catalyst is Raney Ni. The starting materials are as anhydrous as possible. The cyclohexanol formed in the reaction is converted to (III) and recycled .
