The mining machine has two cutter drums (2, 3) mounted on horizontal axes (4) normal to the face to be cut, at respective ends of an arm (7). The arm is pivoted about a central horizontal axis (8) to the main body (9) of the machine. This is guided and driven along the face conveyor (10) in the usual way. Each drum has a disc (16) on the face side, and a spiral vane (17) fitted with pickboxes. The vanes interleave slightly at their peripheries and rotate in opposite directions. The leading drum (2) is somewhat higher and cuts the roof and to its full depth in the seam. The trailing drum is lower and cuts the remainder of the seam and the floor.
