The prods., esp. bars, tubes or profiles, roll sideways over a bed formed by a large number of rotating tubes, through which a coolant is fed. Heat collector tubes are also mounted on a roof located above the bed and functioning as a heat collector screen. The heat transferred to the coolant to reclaim the heat in the rolled prods., e.g. for producing hot water or in space heating. The heat transferred to the coolant is pref. fed directly into hot water pipes, possibly via a heat pump; and the temp. and/or speed of the coolant can be used to control the cooling speed of the prods. A heat collector- screen and -tubes are pref. also located above the roller track feeding bars etc. to the bed. A large amt. of the heating energy, employed to heat bars etc. prior to hot rolling is reclaimed.
