Buried heat exchanger for heat pump - is vertical water filled cylinder containing evaporator coil with expansion valve and water level monitor

The heat exchanger for a heat pump used for heating a house, has a vertical cylinder (1) made of concrete, which is embedded underground. The cylinder has an open top which is fitted with a cap. It is filled with water (2) up to a given level, and an evaporator coil (3) is immersed in the water. It can consist of tubular parts of the same internal diameter which fit into each other. An expansion valve (4) for the coil is housed inside the top, above the water level, and a water level monitor (6) is also housed inside. An alternative design with a horizontal tank made of plastics material is used for extracting heat from the air.
