Plasma is separated from healthy blood by passing it over a filter membrane, made of compatible material with a pore size of 0.1 to 0.6 micron at a velocity of 5-1500 cm/min. The pressure differential above the membrane is kept to within 10-50 mm Hg (20-40 mm Hg). The membrane is either a film or a hollow fibre type, made of hydrophilic material. The inflow blood pump with an inlet from a blood donor supplies a plasma filter bubble trap. The outflow goes through a second bubble trap back to the donor. The plasma is taken to a plasma reservoir and by a plasma pump to a 3-way valve. This directs it either through an absorber cartridge and particle filter back to the donor or to pipe to the plasma treatment. This results in a higher plasma separation efficiency in spite of the lower pressure differential.
